The WasteSorted behaviour campaign, ‘Be a GREAT sort’ was developed to support the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030. The campaign was developed using an evidence-based approach, including research and stakeholder consultation.

The ‘Be a GREAT sort’ campaign was launched in August 2020 and aims to reframe waste as a problem that we can solve and normalise the simple ways to do better than the bin. An evaluation of the campaign was undertaken in June 2021.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of the first year of the campaign including the key learnings from delivering a state-wide behaviour change campaign, how stakeholders are amplifying the campaign and a summary of the evaluation findings.

Further behavioural research was undertaken during 2020-21 to inform the next stages of the ‘Be a GREAT sort’ campaign, including research on food waste avoidance and correct disposal of batteries. The presentation will provide a summary of the behavioural insights from this research.

The presentation will also outline how the evaluation findings, new research and key learnings will inform the 2021-22 campaign.
